Clear Lens Replacement

What Is Clear Lens Replacement?

Clear lens replacement (CLR), commonly referred to in medicine as Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE) or Clear Lens Extraction, is a surgical procedure designed to improve vision by replacing the eye’s natural clear lens with an artificial intraocular lens (IOL). Unlike cataract surgery—which is performed after the eye’s lens becomes cloudy—CLR is done to correct refractive errors such as presbyopia, farsightedness, nearsightedness, or astigmatism, often before a cataract develops.

Who Can Benefit?

This procedure is ideal for adults (usually over 40) who struggle with reading glasses, bifocals, or are not good candidates for laser vision correction because of thin corneas or high spectacle numbers. People with early stage cataracts or those wishing to avoid future cataract surgery may also consider CLR.

The Procedure

CLR is highly similar to modern cataract surgery. After numbing the eye with anesthetic drops, the surgeon creates a micro-incision, removes the natural lens, and replaces it with an artificial lens. The process typically takes about 10 minutes per eye.

Types of Lenses

You may choose from various IOLs based on your eye health and lifestyle, including monofocal (distance or near vision), multifocal (multiple focal points), and toric (astigmatism correction) lenses.

Recovery and Results

Most patients notice sharper vision within two to three days. Recovery is usually quick, and common activities can often be resumed in a few days. A major advantage: once the natural lens is replaced, you will not develop cataracts in that eye in the future.

Risks and Considerations

CLR is generally safe but, as with any surgical procedure, carries risks such as infection or inflammation. Discuss your options and medical suitability thoroughly with our expert team at Chopra Nethralaya.
